| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Real Genius |
Of all the films made in the 80s focusing on young people, Martha Coolidge's "Real Genius" is the only comedy that focuses on how cool kidswith high IQs can be.
Mitch is one of the youngest brainiacs ever accepted at a prestigious West Coast university. He's befriended by Chris Knight, another whiz kid. However, Chris, who is no geek and knows how to kick back, indoctrinates Mitch into the joys of goofing off. For instance, he throws an impromptu pool party in one of the lecture halls. Also, thanks to his expertise with chemicals, Chris turns the hallway in their dorm into an ice-skating rink. However, the two budding Einsteins also spend a lot of time in the lab, where they collaborate on a laser project for a supercilious
professor and foil the plans of a fellow student, a kiss-up named Kent. When Chris and Mitch figure out that the laser they're working on may be used for nefarious purposes, they decided to destroy the project.

Absolutely one of the quickest, cutest movies. Val Kilmer is too funny as Chris, resident party genius not wanting to overstress his brain; not at the expense of his greedy, spiteful, professor Hathaway. (William Atherton)
When the newest kid genius enters the ivy walls of this school, he gets more than he ever imagined, much to his delight and surprise.
A great "coming of age" movie for Mitch (Gabe Garrett). Casting Jonathan Gries as Lazlo, "Original" genius, literally living in a world of his own; through the closet in Mitch's and Chris' dorm room.
