| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Snatch |
Guy Ritchie (Mr. Madonna) wrote and directed this 2000 followup to his moderately successful "Lock, Stock and Two Barrels," on much the same themes. Turkish, an unlicensed boxing promoter, arranges with vicious crime boss Brick Top (Alan Ford, doing a nice Albert Finney-as-monster turn) to have his fighter purposely lose a fight. But the Pakistani gypsy fighter whose English is nearly incomprehensible (show-stealing performance by Brad Pitt!) inexplicably wins the fight and gets Turkish in deep trouble. Meanwhile, a gang disguised as Hasidic Jews steals a huge diamond from Holland and bring it to London where several different parties try to get their hands on it. (Watch for such characters as Boris the Blade and Bullet Tooth Tony.) This is not just a hilarious and extremely violent and profane caper film; there are also mesmerizing visual tricks of the music video/magic realism school. (Every time Jewish New York crime boss Dennis Farina crosses the ocean, there's a quick whap of pills in the mouth/whoosh of the jet that remind me of nothing so much as the repeated heroin-shooting sequences of "Requiem for a Dream.") Fast, funny, and bracing.

Very hard to explain this film; it's about a bunch of different people who are trying to obtain a diamond which is worth a whole lot of money. A lot like Tarantino films.
