| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Keeping The Faith |
This is an excellent movie in which Ben Stiller, a rabbi, (Jake Schram) falls in love with Jenna Elfman (Anna Reilly), who is non-religious. Jake's best friend is a priest, Brian Finn, who also falls in love with Anna. Throughout the movie, Jake struggles with his love for Anna, her non-religion, and his inability to have faith in other people.

As kids, Brian, Jake and Anna were best buddies, Anna being the tomboyish type. It is a decade and a half later, and the boys have become Father Brian Kilkenny Finn, Catholic priest, and Rabbi Jacob Schram -- young and virile spiritual advisors who are still warm colleagues known as "the God Squad." Anna turns up a stunning beauty, and a workaholic executive with spunk and ambition to spare. Both men fall in love with her, but face difficulties: Brian with his vow of celibacy, and Jake with the fact that a raving shiksa would not make a suitable rabbi's wife (his Mom and her friends are busily trying to match him up with a suitable girl). Anne Bancroft plays Ruth Schram, Eli Wallach appears as a mentor rabbi, and veteran director Milos Forman has a lovely cameo as Father Havel. This was Norton's workmanlike but unspectacular directorial debut (2000), working with a script by Yale classmate and sometime roomie Stuart Blumberg. It's pleasant enough, but a bit sitcom-ish.
