| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Dish |
It is July, 1969. The relatively small and remote community of Parkes, Australia happens to have the largest radio antenna in the southern hemisphere to serve NASA's needs for radio and TV remote feed from the first moon landing mission. Sam Neill is warm and gracious as the head of the team at the "dish"; Warburton (Puddy on "Seinfeld") is an uptight American consultant from NASA, and various Australian actors fill out the cast of scientists and townspeople. Roy Billing is especially fun as a Bob Hoskins-like mayor. Lots of terrific period music (from "Magic Carpet Ride and the Youngbloods' "Let's Get Together" to Herb Alpert's version of "A Taste of Honey"). Largely a true story, the film manages to recapture the wonder and excitement of the moon shot, has a bit of suspense with various problems from screwups to bad weather, and offers a sweet, charming, hilarious tale free of sex and violence.
