|Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Winter Sleepers|
|Young German director Tom Tykwer made this film just before his more famous "Run Lola Run." In contrast with the latter's superhyped speed, this 1997 film is languid, dreamy, and cool. The theme is cause and effect, and the malice of fate. Gorgeous blonde translator Rebecca fools around with her boyfriend Marco, a self-centered ski instructor, and lives in a place in the mountains owned by her nurse friend Laura, who also is doing some acting in local theater. In his rush to get it on with Rebecca one night, Marco leaves his keys in his sports car one and the seedy projectionist of the local movie theater, Rene, takes it for a spin and gets into a wreck with Theo, throwing Theo's little girl into a coma. Unseen by anyone, Rene wanders away from the accident with amnesia, and starts a relationship with Laura. The people's lives continue to intertwine in odd ways. Beautifully shot and plotted, the film has a cold, analytical heart, and it's difficult to care about any of the characters, though their situation is fascinating.
