Based upon Pushkin's poem Onegin, the story of a jaded St. Petersburg intellectual who, when forced to move to the country estate willed to him, becomes the object of a young woman's love. He kills his friend, a poet, in a duel then goes into exile for some years. When he returns, he sees the woman again and falls in love with her.
