Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Big Country
This western is an exciting epic that holds you on the edge of your seat, right to its end! A William Wyler directed movie with a superb cast of characters, its story takes place on the beautiful expanse of the western "Big Country". Gregory Peck arrives on the scene from the Navy, in pursuit of his love, the daughter of the biggest ranch, and the biggest ego to go with it. He is unaware of the continual war taking place between her father and family rivals who continually battle out their use of the water for their livestock.
Peck's rival, a cowboy who was on the scene before him and who loves his woman, continues to make him prove his honor by insulting him. Events gradually heat up to the point where shoot-outs and bullets fly. Honor is not restored, until the end when Peck finally takes on the "big country" and a new love. Lots of cowboy shoot outs and excitement make this epic a western never to be forgotten!

THE BIG COUNTRY is a 1958 movie directed by multiple awards winner William Wyler. Gregory Peck arrives from the east in order to marry the daughter of one of the biggest ranchers of "the big country". His civilized manners will soon hurt the feelings of the local cowboys who prefer to shoot than to argue.

An epic western in superb landscapes. A movie to rediscover.
