| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Rock |
This movie stars an angry general, whose special forces were killed in action, but whose families were denied compensation for their deaths, and he wants to take revenge. He sets up poisonous gas rockets inside the prison of Alcatraz, with around 81 hostages, and threatens to launch them against San Francisco if he does not receive 100 million dollars.

Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel (Harris) leads a renegade troupe of marine commandoes who take over the federal facility at Alcatraz and seize a stockpile of chemical weapons as well as 81 tourists as hostages. Hummel demands $100 million in ransom to compensate the families of soldiers who have been killed in covert operations and never received restitution. Otherwise, he will launch 15 rockets loaded with deadly VX nerve gas and aimed at the city of San Francisco. Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Cage), a mild-mannered FBI chemical warfare expert, is teamed with John Patrick Mason (Connery), a crusty ex-con who was the only man ever to break out of Alcatraz successfully, to lead the counterattack against the marauders. Director Michael Bay, never known for emotional depth or character development but plenty of action, turned out this loud, fast, and violent 1996 thriller before going on to "Armageddon" and "Pearl Harbor."
