Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Cape Fear
An ex-con is released after spending 14 years in prision for rape. Once he is released he goes after his lawyer for withholding evidence that could have given him a lesser sentence. He begins to terrorize the family and he goes after their daughter. The lawyer then tries to take the law into his own hands to protect his family.
--Jack Bauer, Resident Scholar

Max Cady (De Niro) has just been released from prison after serving a sentence for rape. Convinced that his defense lawyer Samuel Bowden (Nolte) withheld critical evidence from the trial that would have helped his case, Cady sets out to terrorize Bowden and his family. Director Martin Scorsese's remake of the 1962 thriller, based on a John D. MacDonald novel, ups the ante by making Cady a sort of embodiment of nasty undercurrents within the family: they've moved to Florida to "start over" after Bowden's adulteries, wife Leigh (Lange) still doesn't trust him, and daughter Danielle (Lewis) is at that dangerous age of 15. Although the movie's denouement in a rainstorm on a river achieves an almost comically horror-movie tone, its acting climax occurs a little earlier in a high school auditorium: originally scripted as a chase, Scorsese ordered De Niro and Lewis to ad lib a seduction instead, which they did in one magnificent, unforgettable take. An extra bonus are cameos by Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, who played the leads in 1962, and Martin Balsam, who was also in the first film.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar

Robert Deniro plays a criminal recentley released from prison and takes revenge on his lawyer. Nick Noltes daughter is a main target for Deniro and adds a definite element of scariness to the movie.
