Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Buddy Holly Story
This movie is the story of how Buddy Holly and the Crickets, a small Texas soft rock band, hit the big time against all odds. The three piece band introduced a new sound, rock and roll, but it was rejected by parents, producers, and the overall country music and black blues era. Young people loved the stuff however. The band finally made a hit record in New York. The three white boys were getting along well with a black tour. They even perfomed at the stricly African American Apollo Theatre.

Buddy got married to Maria, a Puerto Rican secretary. The drummer and bassist, his entire band, wanted to go back home to Texas. They broke up and Buddy Holly went on tour along where a tragic plane crash ended his life.

A young band in Texas led by Buddy Holly wants to make a new sound, Rock & Roll. The trouble is the country music industry won't let them. They get a hit record through a New York record company, go to New York, and start to produce their own records. Buddy gets married and dives deeply into his work, trying new things and bringing new elements to his music. He alienates his band mates before going on "one last tour" that ends tragically in Clear Lake, Iowa. Gary Busey does all his own singing as Buddy, and the "live" performances in the movie actually sound like live performances, what with missed lyrics, imperfect playing, and so forth. A worthy example of a "birth of Rock & Roll" bio-pic.
