| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask |
This is one of Woody Allen's early, goofy comedies (1972), VERY loosely based on the megabestselling sex manual of the same title by Dr. David Reuben. Seven unrelated skits purport to address basic questions about sex ("What is sodomy?" "What happens during orgasm?") but of course do nothing of the kind, serving only as a jumping-off place for Allen's craziness. In one, a court jester labors to slip an aphrodisiac to the queen while the king is away. In another, Gene Wilder has a movingly tender and dignified performance as a doctor who is ruined because he falls in love with a sheep. Allen also appears in an Italian-language Fellini/Antonioni parody about a man whose wife cannot get off except when she has sex in public places. There's also a monster-movie parody in which a mad doctor (Carradine) creates a gigantic, 400-foot breast which goes off to terrorize the countryside. Watch for Regis Philbin in a rather tasteless skit about a game show called "What's My Perversion?" The final and probably best sketch concerns Allen as a neurotic, reluctant sperm preparing like a paratrooper for the unknown terrors of being ejaculated. Tony Randall and Burt Reynolds appear as part of the central control operation. The movie is silly and very uneven, but has its moments.
