Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Beauty and the Beast (1991)
In this charming Disney cartoon, Belle is a girl who wishes for a life outside of her small-town village. When her father is imprisoned by a beast, Belle goes to save him. She then decides to make a deal, so her father goes back home, and Belle takes his place. Throughout the days, Belle and the Beast become closer and closer until they fall in love. With the help of some enchanted objects, they spent the nightaway dancing, until Belle sees that her father is sick. The beast lets her go home, and save her father. Meanwhile, the he-man of the village, Gaston, who is in love with Belle, is jealous of the Beast's win over her. He decides to kill him. This film is very magical, and lovely. The animation is splendid, and the ballroom scene is marvelous. The music is beautiful, and the film is deserved of it's Best Picture nomination.
--Estefan Ellison, Resident Scholar

When an evil spell is cast on a man who turns into a beast, a girl must prove her love for him to be real before the last rose petal falls off. Belle is up to the challenge, and she spends some time with the Beast. The two grow closer together, and she manages to prove her love to him just before the last petal falls off the rose. The Beast marries Belle, and they live happily ever after.
--Teddy, Resident Scholar

Belle (O'Hara) is the most beautiful girl in her village. She's also the oddest. She's the daughter of an eccentric inventor named Maurice. When Maurice is on his way to the inventor's convention, he gets lost in the woods. He seeks refuge in an old castle. The master of the castle is a hideous Beast (Benson). Once a prince, he was turned into a Beast when he turned an old woman away. The old woman turned out to be a beutiful enchantress. If the Best doesn't find someone he loves and who loves him back by the time the last petal on his enchanted rose falls, then he will remain a Beast forever. His servants have been turned into furniture and when they try to tend to Maurice, Beast locks Maurice in the dungeon for tresspassing. Belle sets out to find Maurice and agrees to take his place as the Beasts prisoner. The Beast's servants, including Cogsworth(Odgen-Stires), a clock; Lumeire(Orbach), a candlabra; and Mrs. Potts(Lansburry), a teapot give Beast hints on how to win Belle, starting by controlling his temper. Meanwhile, the most handsome (as well as rude, concited, and illiterite) man in town, Gaston(White), plots to try and force Belle to marry him after she rejected him. He doesn't beleive Marices tale about a Beast and plans, with his toadie Lefou, to use Maurice's crackpot image to his advantage. At the castle, Belle and Beast are starting to grow on one another. Will they fall in love and break the spell? A Disney Classic.
