Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Exotica
EXOTICA is a movie written, produced and directed by armenian-canadian director Atom Egoyan in 1994. Best Canadian Feature Film at the 1994 Toronto International Film Festival.

Toronto, Canada. Francis Brown is a government tax inspector who spends all his evenings at the Exotica, a night club presenting young beautiful women who, for 5 $, perform striptease acts for the club's customers. Francis has developed a strange obsession for Christina, one of the girls, and asks for her every night. The only rule of the place : don't ever touch the performer. The DJ of the club is Eric, a character played by Elias Koteas, Christine's former boy-friend who soon becomes terribly jealous of Francis. Eric even persuades Francis to touch Christina during the show. After having done so, the naive Francis is kicked out of the club.

Meanwhile, other stories involve Thomas Pinto, the owner of a pet shop, who spends his nights at the opera house, looking for the right male companion. Thomas is also involved in some strange eggs traffic that Francis has to unravel by examining Pinto's books.

Little by little, one learns that Lisa, Francis's daughter, has been raped and murdered some years ago and that his wife was cheating on him with his brother later on. Since then, Francis lives in his obsessional world, trying to find Lisa in Christine.

One of the best movies of the nineties. A masterpiece.
