| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Michael Collins |
MICHAEL COLLINS is a movie written and directed by Neil Jordan in 1996. Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for Neil Jordan.
1916. Ireland. Once again, an irish rebellion against the british ruler ends in bloodbath and multiple executions. The President of the unofficial Republic of Ireland, Eamon De Valera, played by Alan Rickman, decides then to present the cause of Ireland in the U.S.A. and leaves the country. His friend and ministry Michael -Liam Neeson- Collins is left alone in charge of the rebellion. He soon understands that the only way to defeat Britain is to begin a guerilla war. I.R.A. murders dozens of english officials forcing Winston Churchill to ask for a negociation. Eamon De Valera, jealous of Collins's new celebrity, sends him to London in order to negotiate the treaty with Britain. Four months later, Collins comes back with a treaty that doesn't satisfy De Valera. The treaty is accepted by the Irish Parliament and the people while De Valera is urging the irish population to rebel against Michael Collins.
