| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about From Here to Eternity |
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY is a movie directed by Fred Zinnemann in 1953. Eight academy awards.
Hawai, 1941. First Sergeant Burt Lancaster falls in love with Deborah Kerr, his captain's wife. Kerr despises her husband since the day she lost her child while the captain Holmes was too drunk to call the doctor. Meanwhile, Holmes gives the "treatment" to Montgomery Clift who refuses to join the boxing team of the platoon because he's given up boxing after having accidentally blinded one of his friends while training. Clift and his pal Frank -Maggio- Sinatra are members of the New Congress Club where Clift meets Donna -Lorene- Reed, a young american girl who entertains the local american guys and dreams of returning home in order to have a normal life. Maggio is arrested and the Martial Court condemns him to 6 months of jail because he has left the garrison without permission. Fatso Ernest Borgnine gives him a very hard time in prison and Sinatra dies during an escape attempt. Kerr asks Lancaster to prepare the exams in order to become an officer so that she can divorce Holmes and return to the continent with Burt. But one morning, the japanese attack Pearl Harbour.
A classic.
