| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Miracle Worker |
The touching story of Helen Keller's struggle to overcome her disabilty. Annie Sullivan comes to the Keller's home from a school for the blind, where she was a student, to teach Helen. She has had 9 operations on her eyes and has her sight, however poor it may be. Helen's father is skeptical and after a battle scene in the dining room between Annie and Helen, he concedes to letting her live for 2 weeks alone in a small house used only in the hunting season. At the end of 2 weeks Annie has taught Helen manners, but she still doesn't understand what words mean. It isn't until Helen's welcome home diner that she is taken out to the water pump and it all clicks for her.
This movie was adapted from the Broadway play and before that a teleplay of the same title and also stared Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke. The play and movie earned Anne Bancroft a Tony and an Oscar and earned Patty Duke an Oscar as well, making her the youngest actress up to that point to win an Oscar. This movie is a definate classic.
