| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Jeremiah Johnson |
A young man, an ex soldier, decides to leave civilizaiton behind and go up into the Rocky Mountains to become a Mountain Man. Jeremiah Johnson runs across his mentor, Bearclaw Chris Lap, who teaches him mountain craft and survival. Jeremiah is drawn into various events over which he has little control, one being getting married to a Flathead Indian Chief's daughter. Jeremiah, in trying to do good, inadvertantly injures the Crow Indian burial grounds, and for that they kill his wife and adopted son. From that point on he becomes nearly mad with a lust for revenge, which he carries out until the Crow asks for peace and for him to stop killing their warriors. In the last scene he is reluctantly reaching his hand into the air in the sign of friendship in response to the Crow Chief, who had raised his hand asking for peace between Johnson and the tribe.

Redford plays the loner who goes into the wilderness to become a mountain man and find a more peaceful life than the one he has lead in the army. He struggles to survive on his own but eventually becomes adept. He marries an Indian woman and adopts a son who are then murdered by Indians when Redford violates a burial ground against his better judgement. The fight is then on for revenge.

Jeremiah J. was looking for a new scene, an adventure of sorts. Quite simply, He left all he knew for a better life than what he had. Searching for solitude, braving the uncertain terrain Jeremiah found friends, a companion, unimaginable hardships and made his way as a legend into history.

JEREMIAH JOHNSON is a movie directed by Sydney Pollack in 1972.
Jeremiah Johnson leaves the civilization and heads towards the Rocky Mountains. He will meet strange characters along the road : Bear Claw Chris Lapp who hunts grizzlies, Del Gue who thinks he is still alive because he is bald, Casper, a young mute boy Jeremiah accepts to take with him. He will marry Swan, the daughter of an indian Chief, and live peacefully in the forest for a few months. But the Crow tribe wants him and his family dead after Jeremiah has crossed an indian cemetery in the mountains.
Gorgeous cinematography and a Robert Redford more ecologic than ever.
