Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
The British Robinson family decides to escape a Europe wracked by Napoleon's wars and takes a ship for New Guinea, but storms and pirates drive them aground on a deserted tropical island. On this idyllic paradise they build a life, but a return engagement with the pirates is ultimately in store. This Disney production, filmed on location in Tobago, is burdened by old-fashioned attitudes (all wild creatures are either threats to be killed or cute pets easily tamed; otherwise, the jungle is a great place for swimming and building elaborate tree forts), but it's rollicking good fun anyway.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar

Adventure tales of a family fleeing from government tyrany to a new life who become shipwrecked and stranded on an uninhabited island and must struggle to survive. After freeing her from a band of pirates, the eldest and middle sons vie for the affections of a young woman. The pirates return and the entire family must fight to defend themselves. In the end, rescue arrives, but only the middle son actually leaves (to continue his education). The rest of the family stay on the island and begin a new community.
