| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Truth About Cats and Dogs |
"The Truth About Cats and Dogs" is the name of a Los Angeles radio talk show hosted by successful veterinarian Dr. Abby Barnes (Garofalo). One day, Brian, a caller with a British accent (Chaplin), says he likes Abby's voice and would like to take her out. A short, cute brunette who's convinced she's not particularly attractive, Abby nervously lies over the phone and describes herself as tall and blonde. Then she has to get her gorgeous but not very bright neighbor Noelle (Thurman) to stand in for her on dates. From then on, it's an inverted version of "Cyrano de Bergerac," with Noelle playing Abby in person, and Abby having great aural relations with Brian on the phone and over the airwaves. Although it's a bit of a strain to be asked to to believe this guy can't tell Noelle isn't the woman he fell in love with by sound, or that cute Garofalo thinks herself unattractive, this 1996 film is light, sweet, and charming.
