Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Pretty In Pink
Andie is a poor teenager who is from the wrong side of town, but due to her intellegence and desire for something better, she goes to a posh high school in the "rich" part of town, full of affluent kids whom are referred to as "richies". Her best friend is a guy named Duckie, who is in love with her, desiring more than just friendship. Andie works in a record store with an eccentric woman boss, who is also a surrogate mother to Andie. Andie resides with her unemployed father (her mother left the family when she was young) whom she is constantly hounding to get up off his butt and find employment. Andie is also a very resourceful young woman whom uses her talent as a seamstress to make amazing clothes out of whatever scraps she can find.

Andie soon finds herself on the receiving end of affection from a "richie" kid named Blaine. Andie also has eyes for him and, despite her feelings that rich and poor kids have no place together in this world, accepts an invitation for a date from him. Their date ends up at the home of Blaine's best friend Steff, whom is throwing a party. When Andie and Blaine show up arm in arm, Blaine's richie friends express their disapproval, for the kids in attendance are the same hateful kids who constantly tease and turn up their noses at Andie because she is poor.

Andie's friend Duckie eventually becomes increasingly jealous and hostile because of Andie's association with Blaine. Blaine's arrogant, mean friend Steff, eventually threatens to end their friendship should Blaine continue to carry on with Andie. Blaine, reluctantly takes heed of Steff's threat and begins to ignore Andie. Andie becomes angry with Blaine and starts to question his true intentions.

Andi is a poor high school senior living with her widower father. She falls in love with a well to do classmate named Blane. Although Blane shares these feelings for Andi, he is strongly encouraged by his "friends" not to be seen with her. Andi is embarrassed by her living situation and doesn't even allow Blane to see where she lives. The two had planned on going to prom together, but Blane eventually gave into the pressure of his peers and did not go with Andi. But she was not easily shot down, and so she went anyways. In the end, Blane forgets his friends and follows his heart, straight into Andi's arms.
