| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Pauline and Paulette |
Pauline is a "little girl of 66." Mentally retarded since birth, she has been in the care of her sister Martha, but when Martha dies, her two other sisters Paulette and Cecilia have to decide what to do. Martha's will stipulates that if one or both of the other sisters takes in Paulette and cares for her, Martha's estate will be divided evenly between the three survivors; but if Pauline gets put in an institution, she gets everything. Paulette has a fabric shop and likes to sing and act in operettas; Cecilia lives in Brussels and is seeing a French businessman. Neither is eager to care for simple, likable, but barely functioning Pauline. Van der Groen does an amazing job of acting as a retarded elderly woman, while Petersen is merely excellent as the put-upon Paulette. This Belgian movie released in 2000 is quiet, exquisitely delicate, and strictly for grownup sensibilities.
