| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The House of Mirth |
In 1905 New York City, Lily Bart (Anderson) is a ravishing beauty trying to make the best match for herself when it is almost too late. Her fortunes take a steady downward plunge after supposed women friends do her dirt, and men vie for her (not always honorably), while she tries to make up her mind between her heart (which lies with dashing young lawyer Lawrence Selden, played by Eric Stoltz and looking like an elegant Michael J. Fox) and her head (pressed by various suitors, unmarried and otherwise). A beautifully filmed and delicately acted realization of Edith Wharton's novel -- Anderson assays a challenging role with considerable skill -- but an unmitigated downer. Lots of lovely music by Mozart, Haydn, Borodin, Rossini and others unobtrusively colors the soundtrack, and Glasgow of all places stands in nicely for turn-of-the-last-century New York.
