| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about My Big Fat Greek Wedding |
A Greek woman wants her family to accept the man she's about to marry, but the man is of another nationality and religion. There are many struggles and differences between the two families, and even the two lovers' friends have their own self-doubts.

Toula is Greek through and through and her family wouldn't have it any other way. Even though Toula is over 30 years old, her parents still control her life. So when she starts taking college courses and dating a (non-Greek) man, they are shocked and disappointed. Through humor and love, she manages to convince them that Ian is a good guy, and it's a happy ending.

Toula Portokalos (Vardalos) is a frumpy Greek American girl, considered an old maid at 30 by her family and friends, who works at her father's restaurant in Chicago. (Except for a couple of location shots, Toronto stands in for the Windy City.) While everybody's trying to get her hitched to a nice Greek man, she falls in love with quiet WASP schoolteacher Ian (Corbett, best known as Chris, the radio announcer on TV's "Northern Exposure"). She also schemes to land a job in her aunt's travel agency and get some college, all of which causes her to bloom and makes her hearty but tradition-minded Dad very uneasy. This charming, delightful, and hilarious 2001 film began life as a one-woman play (star Vardalos also wrote it), which was seen by Tom Hanks and his Greek American wife Rita Wilson, and the two agreed to produce it as a film.
