| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence |
MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR. LAWRENCE is a movie directed by Nagisa Oshima in 1983. Nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival.
A prisoner camp in the island of Java, 1942. Tom Conti, the spokesman of the prisoners, is having a hard time trying to understand the subtleties of the japanese psychology. When David Bowie, a british officer, is brought into the camp, Captain Yonoi is attracted by him. But Bowie's rebellions and provocations and above all the strict japanese moral code will lead the captain to take cruel decisions against the european prisoners.
Surprise, the most interesting character of the movie is played by Takeshi Kitano who'll become a few years later the brilliant director of SONATINE.
