Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sneakers
Martin Brice, aka Martin Bishop (Redford) heads a team of super-hackers who specialize in testing the reliability of security systems. Brice and his team are pressured by government agents into stealing a top secret black box that is supposed to be able to crack any encryption system in the world. Twenty years ago, as a college stunt, Brice and a buddy named Cosmo (Kingsley) hacked into Nixon's bank files, the Republican National Committee, and the Federal Reserve, but Cosmo got caught and jailed. Guess who's really behind Brice's new job? This is a fairly lighthearted 1992 thriller by the writers who did "War Games," with a remarkably heavy cast of stars. (James Earl Jones has a straight-faced cameo as Bernard Abbott, director of the National Security Agency.) Strathairn shines as Erwin "Whistler" Emory, a blind phone hacker who gets to do some van driving.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar

SNEAKERS is a movie co-written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson in 1992.

Robert Redford's team is asked by the N.S.A. ( National Security Agency ) to spy on a scientist and to recover a program able to break the most secret computer codes.

An all-star cast for a light high-tech thriller already forgotten.

--Daniel Staebler, Resident Scholar
