| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Roundabout (1950) |
ROUNDABOUT ( La Ronde ) is a movie cowritten and directed by Max Ophuls in 1950. Nominated, in 1952, for the awards in the "Best Art Direction" and "Best Screenplay" categories. Based on Arthur Schnitzler's play.
Vienna, 1900. An all-knowing presenter who could be anyone or maybe simply the director of the movie leads us through different love affairs linked each to the other by their protagonists' desire for love. So we witness the eternal round of love through the eyes of a prostitute, a soldier, an aristocrat, a married woman, a married man, an artist, an actress and a member of the local bourgeoisie.
A masterpiece with some of the best french actors of the time.
--Daniel Staebler, Resident Scholar
