| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Purple Noon |
Based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, PURPLE NOON is a french movie directed by René Clément in 1960. Edgar Allan Poe Award in the "Best Foreign Film" category.
Maurice Ronet is a wealthy young American leading an idle life in Italy. His father has promised $5000 to Alain -Tom Ripley- Delon if he brings Ronet back home. Delon is from a lower class and is kind of jealous of Ronet's style of living even if both become good friends. He's also attracted by Marie Laforêt, Ronet's girl-friend. Fearing that Ronet won't return home, Delon kills him and imagines a complex scheme in order to take over Ronet's money, girl-friend and identity.
This story was remade as "The Talented Mr. Ripley" in 1999. In my opinion, Alain Delon's performance is way better than Matt Damon's as Tom Ripley.
