| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Barry Lyndon |
Redmond Barry, from humble Irish origins, is a gentlemanly rogue determined to make his way into the nobility. As Barry Lyndon, he travels the battlefields, parlors, and bedrooms of 18th century Europe and employs his native wits in seduction, gambling, and duels. He seduces Lady Lyndon, then marries and neglects her after the death of her elderly husband. But as he slowly becomes a better, more devoted man, his stepson Lord Bullingdon plots to bring him down. Stanley Kubrick made this 1975 film between "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining," putting together a script based on William Makepeace Thackeray's Victorian novel, _The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq._. The movie is a technical marvel, with genuine antique clothing, indoors scenes shot with special lenses only by candlelight, and impressive compositional technique. But it's more than 3 hours long, the lead actors are rather languid, and the average moviegoer may find it difficult to care much what happens to them.
