| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Brothers McMullen |
Writer-director and star Edward Burns made an impressive debut with this film at the age of 27, in 1995. Three Irish Catholic brothers in their 20s are on their own in New York after their alcoholic, wife-abusing father dies and their mother races back to Ireland to be with her one true love. Each in his own way is fearful of becoming like the father. Barry (Burns) is dedicated to his career and has an acute phobia for romantic commitment, but finds himself lucky in both love and work, though they pull him in opposite directions. Patrick (McGlone) is torn between his love for his faith and his love for Susan, his fiancee and longtime Jewish girlfriend. Jack is stuck in a marriage to Molly gone stale, under pressure to have children and not feeling ready, and having an affair with Ann. This low budget feel-good movie has only so-so writing and acting, and a far too "pat" happy ending, but somehow retains a breezy charm.
