| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Absence of Malice |
ABSENCE OF MALICE is a movie produced and directed by Sydney Pollack in 1981. Three nominations for the Academy Awards.
Sally Field is a journalist working for a Miami newspaper. She's covering the vain efforts of the D.A. in order to solve the murder of a union leader. She is soon manipulated by Bob Balaban who's in charge of a special task force and writes a paper involving Paul Newman, the son of a bootlegger, in the murder. Suddenly thrust into the front page, Newman, an honest small businessman, loses his clients and can not obtain from Sally Field the identity of her sources. Shunted between her growing love for Newman and her professional duty, Sally Field doesn't know any more what to think of the case. Meanwhile, Newman imagines a way to get even with the D.A. and Balaban by setting them against themselves.
