Sean Thornton (Wayne) returns to his childhood home in Inisfree Ireland. He purchases his childhood home called Whiter Morn and is immediately hated by his neighbor Will Danaghur (who wanted the land for himself for personal reasons). Sean also finds himself attracted to Will's sister Mary Kate (O'Hara), a feisty red headed lass, and he decides to attempt to court her. Her brother forbids it, but with the help of the parish priest, a local protestant minister, and the town matchmaker, they eventually get together. Once married, all things are not as they should be, and in order to save the marraige, Sean has to overcome the troubles of his past and fight for Mary Kate.
The movie includes one of the greatest and comical fight scenes in movie history.
