| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Ratcatcher |
RATCATCHER is the first full-length movie of scottish director Lynne Ramsay. The picture was written and directed in 1999.
The setting is Glasgow in 1973 during the strike of the garbagemen. A few weeks in the life of Tommy who lives with his parents and his two sisters in a building near a polluted canal. The family waits for the moment the city council will at last move them to a more healthy spot. Tommy accidentally kills one of his friends who drowns in the canal. He won't share his feelings of guilt and tries to find by himself a way to escape the ordinary life of his family. By taking a bus, he'll discover, in the countryside, a site with dreamlike houses where he'll spend hours wishing his family would move here. He also makes the acquaintance of a young prostitute with whom he can share laughs and tenderness.
