| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Ordet (1955) |
ORDET is a Danish movie directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer in 1955. The picture won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The setting is the Jutland province in 1925. Henrik Malberg is the patriarch of the Borgen family. He lives with his three sons, his daughter-in-law and his two grandchildren in a farm. Very religious, Henrik has to cope with an agnostic son and another young son who, against his father's wish, wants to marry the daughter of a religious fundamentalist with intolerant religious beliefs. Johannes, the third son, who has studied theology has become insane, assuming he's Christ and having hallucinations.
Will the death of Inger, Henrik's daughter-in-law, who passes away while giving birth to a stillborn child, cause a general reconciliation or, on the contrary, accentuate irreconcilable differences ?
ORDET is a magnificent film about faith and tolerance that belongs to the category of the most important movies ever presented. Masterpiece.
