Based on a Joseph Kessel novel, THE PASSERBY ( la Passante du Sans-Souci )is a movie directed by Jacques Rouffio in 1982 and is also the last film of Romy Schneider. Four nominations for the french Academy Awards.
Max -Michel Piccoli- Baumstein, the wealthy President of a non-governmental Organisation, kills Mathieu Carrière, the Ambassador of Paraguay, in his Paris office. During his trial, he will explain what has lead him to this totally unexpected action.
50 years before, his father has been killed by the German S.A. in the Berlin of 1933 and he was taken in by Romy Schneider and Helmut Griem, a German couple who didn't agree with Hitler politics. After the arrest of Griem by the Gestapo, Romy Schneider and the little Max Baumstein came to Paris where Romy survived by singing in a cabaret. In order to get the release of her husband, she will finally accept to spend the night with her admirer, the german diplomat Mathieu Carrière. But Carrière will do away with Schneider and Griem when finally reunited in Paris. 50 years later, Piccoli will avenge them.
