A young American mathematician, Dustin Hoffman, and his British wife, Susan George, have just moved in Susan's family house, lost in the countryside. While Dustin is dedicating himself to the writing of his book, Susan must deal with the advances of her ex-boyfriend. Soon, a group of local bad boys begins to make fun of Dustin's intellectual American manners. Dustin wants to avoid confrontation but his tolerant attitude unfortunately leads to the brutal rape of his wife. The next day, the bad boys want to enter by force Dustin's house who's taken in a mentally sick guy who's just killed a young girl.
