Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Big Day (1949)
THE BIG DAY (Jour de Fête) is a comedy cowritten and directed by Jacques Tati in 1947. The picture earned a nomination for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

The film depicts one day of the life of a small rural town in France. It's a big day because the fair has come for its annual apparition. Jacques Tati, the local postman, is a nice but rather eccentric figure of the town. He's got the unique ability to lead the simplest actions into a catastrophy. After having watched at the fair a short-movie about the modernity of the U.S. Post Office, he decides to modify the way he's worked until now. Quickness and efficiency will from this moment on become his motto.
