| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Wake of the Red Witch |
Adventurer John Ralls, set adrift by islanders, is rescued by a merchant vessel. Its owner, Dutch merchant Sidneye, admires Ralls' spirit and provides him with a command. On an island both Ralls and Sidneye fall in love with the niece of the French Governor, Angelique. Angelique prefers Ralls, but when he accidentally kills her uncle, she marries Sidneye.
Sidneye soon grows jealous of Ralls; he doesn't even give word when Angelique becomes deadly sick. Yet Ralls learns of her sickness and is with Angelique in her last moments.
Afterwards he hijacks one of Sidneye's ships carrying six million in gold and scuttles it, on a reef barely reachable for divers.
Years go by - Sidneye has become handicapped, but manages to lure Ralls into a trap. Yet he is not able to kill him - the two agree that Ralls will dive to the wreck and regain the gold, while Sidneye will make the effort worth while.

WAKE OF THE RED WITCH is an adventure movie directed by Edward Ludwig in 1948.
Captain Ralls voluntarily scuttles his ship, the Red Witch, loaded with gold in lingots, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. A few months later, his employer, the wealthy Dutch shipowner, Mayrant Sidneye, will take his revenge by luring Ralls towards an isolated island and blocking the lagoon exit. Both men have a common history : seven years before, Mayrant married the girl Ralls was madly in love with. The dutchman tries to persuade Ralls to lead him to the place where his ship loaded with gold sank. In a dramatic final, Ralls will enter the sunken boat that is lying on the edge of a sea fault.
