Vienna has hired her former lover Sterling Hayden to protect her against the ranchers lead by Mercedes McCambridge. Vienna has built a saloon/casino in anticipation of the future arrival of the railroad in the country. Meanwhile the Dancing Kid decides to rob the local bank. Vienna is accused of being part of this scheme and must run away from the vigilantes who want to lynch her and the Dancing Kid gang.
