| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Fun With Dick and Jane |
Dick's a successful areospace engineer and Jane is his stay-at-home wife. They have a son, Billy, and a dog, Spot and live in a nice middle class neighborhood. Things are going great, they're putting in a pool, things couldn't be better. Then out of the blue Dick gets fired. Soon the bills start piling up, the pool guys walk, the landscaping guys repo the front yard, and Dick and Jane realize they're not going to make it. After Jane's failed attempt to get a job (the only two jobs she's qualified for are secretary and prostitute, though Dick avers she's not qualified to be a secretary), they're forced to go on welfare. Things get worse when Dick is busted by the welfare office for not reporting a job as a stand-in at the opera and is denied welfare. Then Dick goes over the edge- he's decided to rob a grocery store. Jane knows he'll probably kill himself so she insists on accompanying him on the job. Their life of petty crime begins when they successfully knock over an x-rated motel. The more places they rob, the better Dick and Jane get. Soon they're knocking over the phone company, tv evangelists, record stores, and stealing cars. Before long, they're back to their old comfortable white collar life styles, the pool's finished, all their bills are paid, and life is good. Then, when invited to attend a formal party at Dick's old company, they decide to clean out the boss' safe. A funny, ofter overlooked movie.
