Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Nights of Cabiria
Cabiria is a prostitute who wears a tough translucent exterior but nevertheless looks for meaning through romantic love. Though she has deflating experiences like being pushed into the Tiber River, and being led-on and used by an actor, she repeatedly opens her heart to the hope of finding stability and love.
--David Bellos, Resident Scholar

Cabiria is a petite, waif-like streetwalker in Rome not long after the Second World War. Born to lose, but never to give up, she is a gentle soul who manages to maintain a positive outlook through countless heartbreaking setbacks. (She's sort of a female counterpart of Chaplin's Tramp.) A movie star from the Via Veneto takes her home to his fancy apartment, then gets distracted by other things; a boyfriend steals 40,000 lire and nearly drowns her; she goes to a shrine to seek the help of the Blessed Virgin; and eventually she meets a kind accountant who has watched her act out her heart's desires while hypnotized on a stage. Will he turn out to be her knight in shining armor? Masina acts her lovely heart out in this very sweet, depressing 1957 classic co-written and directed by her husband Federico Fellini.
