| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Black Rain |
Two New York cops, gruff and unethical Nick Conklin (Douglas) and younger partner Charlie Vincent (Garcia), catch a Japanese killer in New York and escort him back to Osaka, Japan where he escapes. They team up with a local detective, Masahiro "Mas" Matsumoto (Takakura) and descend into the yakuza (Japanese gangster) subculture. Although this 1989 film is a typically stylish Ridley Scott thriller, some of its characterization of Japanese mores and behavior is rather stereotypical. Matsuda portrays a rivetingly creepy and sadistic villain.

In this action movie directed by Ridley Scott, a troubled cop, Michael Douglas, and his partner Andy Garcia captures a Yakuza gang member in counterfitting and brings him back to Osaka, Japan. When he escapes, Douglas and Garcia go on a man hunt with the "help" of the Osaka Police. Douglas witnesses the death of his partner and vows vengance. His Japanese counterpart, played by Ken Takakura, objects to Douglas's lack of honor and his wild behavior. After working with another Yakuza member, the two capture the gang member. During the fighting the counterfitting plates go missing. As Douglas is departing the airport, he tells Takakura that the plates are very vauable and who ever has them is set. Takakura knows that Douglas was on the take in New York and thinks he has the plates, but instead, Douglas gives the plates to Takakura showing that he does indeed have honor.

Two NYC policemen must bring back a Japanese yakuza to Tokyo. Unfortunately, the criminal makes fools of the american cops by disappearing at the Tokyo airport. They will soon intervene in the American manner in order to help the local police forces to get rid of the bad guys.
