| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House |
This is the story of an ad executive (Cary Grant), his wife (Myrna Loy) and his two daughters. They live in New York City and are crammed into a very small apartment with not enough bathrooms or closets.
They begin to look for a house in the country and decide to go to Connecticut and they find a very old house. Against the advice of their best friend and lawyer (Melvyn Douglas), they buy this revolutionary war period house that turns into a disaster for their bank account.
They hire all kinds of people to help make the house a 'dream house'. It has to be torn down and the original amount of the job skyrockets...but through it all there are many laughs as you see all the people taking advantage of the poor hapless city folk.
One of the funniest scenes is where Myrna Loy is telling the painting contractor what colours she wants for the house.
Most people think of older movies as very boring, but I find them much funnier than any of the current ones and it shows that a movie can be very funny without having crude, vulgar language in it. This is a movie the whole family can enjoy.
