| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Ballad of a Soldier |
BALLAD OF A SOLDIER is a movie cowritten and directed by Grigori Chukhraj in 1959. The picture earned a nomination for the Academy Award in the "Best Writing, Story and Screenplay written directly for the Screen" category.
The setting is Russia, during WWII. Thanks to an act of heroism, Private Aliusha Skvortsov obtains the permission to visit his mother and leave the front for 6 days. On his way home, he'll get acquainted with a crippled soldier, with the adulterous wife and the father of one of his companions of war and with a young girl whom with he'll begin an innocent love story. Because of numerous delays, he'll finally see his mother only to leave her a few moments later in order to get back to the front.
