| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Erik the Viking |
Erik (Robbins) is a pleasant and optimistic Viking warrior who isn't terribly interested in war and pillage but wishes everybody could "just be friends." He gathers the men of his village to sail on a search for Valhalla to ask the gods to end the Age of Ragnarok so that his people may see the sunlight again. Along the way they meet Halfdon the Black (Cleese), who is a cheerful and reluctant torturer, a Japanese slavemaster who berates the Vikings for never having committed ritual suicide in their lives, the island of perpetually singing people who can't carry a tune, and other oddities. This 1989 film written and directed by ex-Python Terry Jones, satirizes the Vikings, and though it includes former Python regulars Cleese and Neil Innes in the cast (not to mention Jim Broadbent as a rapist, Ernest the Viking, and the incredibly lovely Imogen Stubbs), it comes off as a mildly amusing but weak Python imitation.
