Francie Lawrence (Sandra Dee) is Gidget who, like hundreds of other teenagers during summer vacation, heads for the beach. Soon she finds herself adopted as the mascpt of a group of college boys who surf at Malibu. As days go by, Gidget is increasingly attracted to one particular boy, Moondoggie (James Darren), a young law-student. But, their young romance is complicated when a surf-bum known as Kahoona (Cliff Robertson) makes a play for the naive Gidget.
