| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about River's Edge |
Inspired by a true event that happened in Milpitas, California in 1981, a loser high school kid strangles his girlfriend for insulting his late mother, then brags about the killing and shows his friends the body. Aimless and adrift themselves, no one's sure what to do. Layne (Glover), a manic hedonist, wants to protect their friend and get him smuggled out of the country, but other kids like Matt (Reeves) think maybe someone should inform the police. Dennis Hopper has a memorable supporting role as Feck, a nearly homeless veteran with one leg who deals out weed and tries to escape the ugliness of the world by living a life of fantasy, but has to face the situation eventually. Joshua Lee Miller has an especially frightening turn in this dark, dark 1986 film as Matt's little brother, who seems destined for a life of psychopathic crime. Not a movie to watch when you're feeling at all delicate.
