| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Peggy Sue Got Married |
Peggy Sue (Turner) is a 43-year-old housewife and mother whose marriage to Charlie Bodell (Cage), the cheating husband who got her pregnant at 18, looks close to collapse. When she starts to plan for her 25th high school reunion, she is somehow magically transported back to the early 1960s and given a chance to change the entire course of her life since high school. She gets to speak once again with her long-deceased grandparents, spends more time with the sweet high school nerd Richard (Miller), and becomes fascinated with a "beatnik" figure named Michael (O'Connor), but eventually discovers she would have made many of the same choices. This 1986 film directed by Francis Ford Coppola seems rather light for him. Though 30-ish Turner doesn't really look like either a teen or a homemaker in her 40s, she does an excellent job of bringing Peggy Sue and her issues to life. The supporting cast includes Maureen O'Sullivan, John Carradine, Helen Hunt, Sofia Coppola, and young Jim Carrey. The Marshall Crenshaw Band cameos as the reunion entertainment.
