| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about A Patch Of Blue |
Selina D'Arcy (Elizabeth Hartman), an 18-year old blind white girl, lives an isolated, Cinderella-like existence with her mother Roseanne (Shelly Winters, 1965 Best Supporting Actress) and drunken grandfather, “Ol' Pa." Still, gentle Selina wants nothing more than to listen to the radio and occasionally string beads in the park. It is there that she meets handsome black businessman Gordon Ralfe (Sydney Poitier) who immediately sizes up her plight, and invites her to his apartment for lunch, much to the chagrin of his conservative brother (Ivan Dixon),”let Whitey solve his own problems.”
Both Gordon and Selena are delighted as she learns such everyday things as relying on her sense of smell, calling the pay-phone operator, and pushing “Walk” to listen for traffic to stop. Of course, she falls in love with Gordon and relates how, as a girl, one of her mother's lovers blinded and raped her. As Gordon's compassion for the girl increases, he encounters Roseanne as she and a friend plan to open a brothel. Despite Roseanne's name-calling, Gordon implies that as an 18-year old, Selina can now do what she wants. Ol' Pa agrees, “she's no kid any more, Roseanne.” Knowing their love would be ill-fated, Gordon arranges her admission to a special school for the blind, parting amidst a vague agreement that they will re-evaluate their relationship in one year.
