| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Diva (1981) |
American opera singer Cynthia Hawkins (Fernandez) refuses to do recordings. One of her fans, a young Parisian courier named Jules (Andrei) secretly and illegally bootlegs a concert performance by Hawkins. Shortly after, a young woman drops in his delivery pouch another tape which contains information that implicates a powerful politician with the mob, and then she is murdered. Now Jules has both the mob after him (for the surveillance tape) and a pair of wealthy Asian businessmen (for his valuable bootleg recording). Fortunately, he finds useful friends in Alba (Luu), an art student and shoplifter, and the mysteriously wealthy Weinstadt (Bohringer). This stylish New Wave-y 1981 film was writer-director Jean Jacques-Beineix's near debut; visually startling and featuring a thrilling motorcycle chase through the streets and subway of Paris, one might call it a "bright noir."
