| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Return of Martin Guerre |
In the 16th century, Martin Guerre, who left his village in central France to fight in the wars, returns many years later to his home and wife. The village celebrates his safe return, but after he has a disagreement with his uncle, people begin to doubt he is who he says he is. He seems to know everyone, and many unusual things about the people and the place, and the wife, Bertrande says he's her husband. But then another man shows up claiming to be Martin Guerre, and the authorities are forced to put the first man on trial. This 1982 French film, based on the novel _The Wife of Martin Guerre_ by Janet Lewis, is rich, beautiful, romantic, and sad, and was one of the films that helped make Depardieu a star (though one could argue that Baye has the more challenging role). A pale American remake called "Sommersby" was released in 1993.
